I've used only watercolors for the base. Usually I do it as 2 really soft, light layer. After it add the colors with the pencils. I love these pencils since you no need to wash over, and the pencil able to accept 3-4 layers after eachother. If you need more, then use fixative and you can add more with the pencils.
